Sunroom Renovation Update
I’m in the middle of a multi year historic home renovation. It is a long and difficult process (even Harley is tired) but also exciting and rewarding to be able to bring this Middletown treasure back to its glory with a few modern day convenience upgrades. When we first bought the house over six years ago, we started with the bones of the house. Having already owned a Victorian farmhouse we knew the bones are the key to living in a house that is more than 100 years old. We immediately replaced the HVAC, installed all new plumbing and upgraded the electric. Next on the list was building a garage because the house did not have one at all and it was a deal breaker for my husband. We are finished with the addition of a primary bedroom suite on the first floor and addition of a butlers pantry, wet bar and storage (so important in an older home) which took all of 2023.
In the process of upgrading the old back porch into the new butlers pantry/back hallway we were planning to redo the sunroom which is directly above it on the second floor originally serving as the sleeping porch and updated in the 1980s to a sunroom. During the beginning of this phase our architect learned that the original foundation for the porch was a dry stack and was failing therefore we needed to tear down the back of the house, pour a new foundation and rebuild.
This was a huge set back as far as our timeline, but we were glad to do it since it’s the bones that matter! No we have the peace of mind to know that our investment is literally secure in our new foundation.
Starting from scratch in the sunroom enabled us to build a bank of windows that would make the space open and add a lot of light into the second floor landing too.
We have a great team of trim work experts that have been adding wood trim details to all the new and remodeled rooms that matches the existing trim in the older parts of the house.
If there’s any space in the house that is dedicated just for me it has been the sunroom. I enjoy reading and working in it as well as having a Birds Eye view of the backyard and swimming pool. Keeping that in mind I worked with my decorator to make it fit my taste more so than anywhere else in the house and you guessed it that would be black and yellow!
The black and white tile floor turned out stunning! It’s a real show stopper and blends in beautifully to the historic Victorian style of the house. Next we punched it up with bright buffalo paid yellow and white wallpaper.
Stay tuned as I continue to update the room with furniture and accessories.
